Chapter

Seventeen

Daniel's mind whirled with thoughts on how to make the situation right. How to correct his wrong that now threatened his and Anwen's affinity?

Looking back at his farce, he'd been a fool to think she would see his lying as a lark, nothing too bedeviled that one could not forgive.

Anwen stood before him, all enraged beauty, and never had she looked more ravishing and untouchable than she did at this moment.

"You were so different from how I knew you would be should you know who I was that I chose to keep the details of my new title to myself. For a little while at least, although I did not mean for it to go on as long as it has."

She shook her head, the scowl between her brows deepening. Not a promising sign if he were going to win her forgiveness. Damn it all to hell. He hoped he had not done unforgivable damage.

"You allowed me to give myself to you, a man who I thought was a groom! How do you think that makes me feel? I do not know who it was that I loved that night," she said, pacing before him.

The word love reverberated around in his head for a moment before what she said brought him to his senses. "I'm the same man, Anwen. Before inheriting the title, I spent my days idle and without much direction. This world you've lived in your entire life was not a place I thought I'd ever have to navigate. I felt certain the late Lord Orford would marry and sire an heir, and any chance of me inheriting would be a moot point."

"And, what are you trying to say?" she said, stopping her pacing to glare at him. "So inheriting this estate and becoming a marquess has made you into a liar? And do not say you've not known how to live in my world, as you call it. Where were you living before moving to Surrey?"

Daniel cleared his throat, not wanting to delve into his life before becoming a marquess. It did no one any good to remember those nights of debauchery and wickedness. "London, but not your London, I would add."

"You lie, and there is little you can say now that I would ever believe. You have proven to be a man who plays games with others and thinks it's amusing." She paused, crossing her arms over her chest. "Tell me, was our time together a means by which you could force me to marry you? A woman intimate with a servant would provide enough fodder for you to get your way."

Daniel did not reply, merely watched with severe hopelessness as Anwen clasped her forehead and strode to the window, looking out over the front drive. Her silence echoed through the room like a death knell.

"I would never force you to do anything you did not wish to. I would've thought the friendship we cultivated would have at least settled that fear." Daniel approached her, wanting to pull her into his arms, but he resisted.
